Seventh Street Baptist Church began as a mission Sunday School in June, 1954. The First Baptist Church of Nederland, Texas, saw a need for a mission on the east side of Nederland, and began the work necessary to establish one. The building was secured in August, 1954 with rent of $25. per month. The first service was held on September 19, 1954 in the old Ware Store Building at Boston and Eleventh Street with 51 present. It was officially named the "First Baptist Mission". Rev. Francs James was pastor of the mission until June, 1957.
In December of 1955, the church secured a tract of land on Seventh Street. A permanent building was constructed under the leadership of pastor-builder, Rev. A.W. Ludlow. The building could accommodate about 200 people. The first services in the new building were conducted on October 13, 1957, with 90 present for Sunday School.
In November of 1957, Rev. Edwqrd Greig, became pastor of the mission. then in June of 1958, the mission became a cooperative Baptist Church with Rev. Greig as pastor. There were 161 charter members which moved their letters from First Baptist Church. On June 15, 1958, church approved name change to Seventh Street Baptist Church. In February of 1958, Rev. Greig resigned as pastor. Rev. Rayford Harrison was called in June, 1959, and remained until 1974.
In August, 1959, plans were begun for a building program. Bonds were sold to finance the building of a new auditorium and educational wing. The church agreed to purchase the land adjoining the church property in August of 1960 to meet the needs of the growing church. In July of 1962, plans were begun to rework the buildings that were in existence and to add educational space.
